You’re not great looking? It’s Okay. Only 2% are.

If you feel you are just average looking, you’re right at home with 66% of the population.  Would you feel even better about yourself knowing that 17% of the population is either unattractive or very unattractive?  Don’t feel terrible if you aren’t beautiful–only 2% of people are considered truly gorgeous.  That leaves 15% who are categorized as very attractive, but they are still in the minority.

These statistics are from the book “Appearance Is Everything,” by Steve Jeffes. Despite the title, Jeffes writes that no matter what you look like, you will do well if you believe in yourself,  maintain your self-worth, and work at achieving your goals.  It’s true. Look around you; most people just go about their business.

Jeffes’  figure of 17% beautiful or very attractive  is supported by a shallow dating site called Beautiful People.  It only accepts handsome studs and cute babes, based on the votes of existing members viewing submitted photos.  In October 2009, they accepted only 360,000 people out of 1,860,000 love-seeking applicants worldwide.  That’s slightly more than 19%.   Yet, apparently ALL 1,860,000 men and women felt they look great enough to be among the chosen.

Looks are subjective.  I think everyone in this photo is average looking.  Do you see a guy or girl you would place in a higher category?

Susan Boyle: it’s her age, not just her looks

A number of bloggers have complained that the world should not have marveled at the sweet voice streaming from Susan Boyle simply because she didn’t look the part. Yes, it’s unfair, but people also responded the way they did because of her age. “Where has she been all these years, her talent going to waste?” At last, she has been discovered.

And what if she was an unattractive 15 year-old girl? People would have cheered in response to someone so young singing so well. Her looks would have meant less.

And if she where an unattractive 25 year-old? My guess is the public reaction would have been far less exuberant.

Experts say beauty is all about sex

Last night I started reading a book about beauty written by a professor who has studied physical attractiveness for more than 30 years. He reports that the biological purpose of beauty to to attract others for sex, meaning reproduction, more than for pleasure. He provides many fascinating biological reasons behind our behavior, such as women changing their hairstyles, make-up, and fashions to keep their men happy, subconsciously knowing their men by their nature like variety (meaning lots of different women).

In virtually every culture, men find younger women more attractive than older ones less able to bear children, while women are more attracted to older men, presumably because older men are financially more capable of caring for women and their children. I used to resent the fact that women liked older rich men (security), but then I realized they are much wiser than men who choose younger women primarily for their beauty (sex).

The book is titled “LOOKS: Why they matter more than you ever imagined,” by Gordon L. Patzer, Ph.D.
